Sheepdog Krav Maga

Why We Do What We Do

Our Background & Philosophy

At Sheepdog Krav Maga we never forget who we are training. While some of us may have prior military, police or significant martial arts experience, most of us are normal, everyday people, working our forty plus hours per week, maintaining a home and going about all of our other duties. However, we can’t ignore the threats present today. And despite where we are in life, WE ALL NEED TO TRAIN!!

The instructors at Sheepdog Krav Maga will always work to challenge you and build you up regardless of your physical ability or experience level. Our training curriculum will both test the most experienced practitioner as well as teach those with little to no experience.

We strive to stay current in our training so we can be our best for you and offer reasonable and effective solutions to violent encounters.

Bill Wright

Owner and Chief Instructor

Bill has been training in Krav Maga for 14 years. He began his self-defense career teaching R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) classes at several local universities.  In 2014, he moved to Body Shop Fitness in Mount Juliet, TN and founded Sheepdog Krav Maga. He is certified through the United States Krav Maga Association and holds a Coaches license with 360 Krav Maga in Long Beach, California.

In addition, Bill is the former President of the Tennessee Emergency Rescue and Recovery Association where he trained and handled search and rescue dogs. He has worked in the Claims and Risk Management industry for over 30 years, and currently works with an organization that specializes in the management of the unique risks inherent to law enforcement activity.

Brett Penix

Assistant Instructor

Brett has been practicing various forms of martial arts and combatives for over 20 years. At the age of 10, he started training in traditional arts such as Karate, Taekwondo, and wrestling. In his twenties, Brett moved onto training in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) -- a mix of boxing, Ju Jitsu, Muay Thai, and Kickboxing. He has spent the better part of the last decade training in different combative systems, namely Street Jeet Kun Do and Krav Maga, as well as dabbling in a few others. Brett was born with a visual disability and was confronted with violence and bullying early in life. In adulthood, he was once again confronted with violence and mugged on more than one occasion. When he says that self-defense and combatives are important to him, he means it!  Brett is passionate about self-defense, and has found his calling and purpose in teaching others to protect themselves so they don't have to live in fear.

 Trinity Reynolds

Assistant Instructor (Kids)

Trinity has been training with Bill for four years. She recently graduated high school and has the whole world at her feet. After graduation, she hopped on a plane to do missions work with her father and brother in Uganda. Standing at a half-inch over five feet, Trinity may be tiny, but she is undeniably mighty. Her training has taught her how to handle herself and keep her head in situations that might otherwise throw someone else into a panic. She knows how to assess a situation and disarm a potential threat. Because she has two younger brothers at home and has babysat countless children, she is passionate about teaching kids how to stay in control, stay safe, and stay alive.

  • SIMULATION NIGHTS!!  We use our controlled and safe environment to allow your child to practice their new skills, on an adult, at full speed. We set up mock abductions, assault situations, or bullying scenarios where they have to use physical force to escape the situation. This makes us different than other self-defense programs. We teach it, and then we test it. The kids love it!

I have been taking Krav Maga with Bill for about a year and a half now. When I first started, I remember being very timid in class only wanting to work with other ladies as the guys intimidated me. Unintentionally, of course, I used to say I was sorry after every time I hit somebody.  As women, we are not generally trying to be fighters. I was also about 70 pounds heavier. In the time that I have spent in these classes, my self-confidence has grown tremendously, not just in feeling confident if  I'm ever put in a situation where I have to protect myself or others, but just in myself in general. Now, I welcome training with any of the guys -- even those that are a foot taller than I am or bigger than me -- as I want to put myself in real life training situations. I don’t apologize for every bump or bruise or hit I might inflict, but I know that that training may someday save my life. I took both my daughters to some classes as well because one was going off to college and the other, moving across the states. I wanted them to have some self-defense training going into those situations. The other part I love so much about these classes is the people have become an extended family for me. People I count on and have formed bonds with. I was not expecting that to happen...It just did! I love Krav Maga, and from a health perspective, it’s already saved me. and for that I’m grateful! And, losing weight was just an added bonus!
